I was delighted to read that the new police commander for Brighton and Hove, Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, has told participants in the Naked Bike Ride to cover up their most intimate parts or risk breaking the law (The Argus, June 6). This is the right decision and is in stark contrast to previous years.
Ever since the event started, I have argued that the cyclists can still make their point while maintaining a basic level of modesty.
There will be many people in the city, both residents and tourists, who will not know that the bike ride is happening and will unwittingly come across it on the day.
Being Brighton, of course, many of these people will not bat an eyelid at this, but there will be some – and I’m thinking particularly of families with young children – who will be offended by the site of completely naked adults cycling through the city centre.
I am pleased common sense has prevailed and I would like to congratulate Mr Kemp on this change of policy.
Councillor Dawn Barnett, Conservative, Brighton and Hove City Council
