For many years there was a coastguard station in Hove close to the Kingsway at the foot of Hove Street.

Established in 1823, it expanded to become something of an eyesore and the Hove Commissioners were keen to remove it.

Although permission was granted in 1908 to demolish coastguard cottages, they did not finally go until 1936.

The coastguard station became part of HMS King Alfred, the next door naval training centre for officers during the Second World War.

It was not finally demolished until 1968 when Hove Council bought the site for extensions to the King Alfred leisure centre, which have never been built.
