A talented teen who defied medics has won herself a coveted place at the Brit School.

Lauren Gander, 13, from Bexhill, who was born with spina bifida, beat thousands of applicants to win one of just 24 places at the Brit School in Croydon which boasts Sussex singing sensation Adele among its former pupils.

Doctors warned her parents she may never be able to walk but Lauren has overcome the odds and not let the condition stop her from doing great things.

Among hermany achievements, Lauren has raised more than £300,000 for charity, won two Argus Achievement of the Year awards and was also an Olympic torch bearer last summer.

Lauren, who currently attends Bexhill High School, said: “I literally screamed when I opened the letter – I think I deafenedmymum.

“I was so shocked because there are only 24 places available for people who live outside the area.

“I don’t feel nervous at all I’m just completely excited to start and it’s my birthday on the same day as well.

“I used to do a lot of singing, acting and dancing when I was younger and I still enjoy it a lot, but I have kind of moved into fine art more which is what I’ve chosen to focus on at the Brit School.

“I love the thrill of making people happy which is why I started the fundraising and shows.

“I didn’t do it for fame I did it for charity work. It has made me so happy – it has just been one big ride.”

Linda Gander, Lauren’s mother, said she was incredibly proud of her daughter who never fails to surprise her.

She added: “It is amazing what she has achieved.

“Because of her own problems I think she became aware of her other people’s problems and needs and wanted to help and make a difference.

“She is so excited about it and I am excited for her.”

Lauren will start year 10 at the Brit School on August 27.
