There was a sea of pink on Saturday and Sunday as 5,000 people descended on Stanmer Park to do their bit for charity.

Many were decked out in fancy dress, including boas, cowboy hats, ballerina outfits, pink wigs and even Mexican hats and false moustaches.

They were all there to run or walk 5km around the park to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The Argus:

Some were taking part in memory of a relative, friend or work colleague who had died while others were doing it to mark their own survival from the disease.

Others were keen to take part simply to do what they could to support the charity's vital work researching the causes and treatment of cancer.

Weather conditions were warm both on Saturday afternoon and yesterday morning as people made their way around the course.

They included a team of more than 30 people from the 2nd Hassocks Guides.

Guides, guide leaders and parents got together for the event in memory of guide leader Anne Eastham, who died from cancer just before last Christmas.

The Argus:

Joanna Hawkins from the group said: “We thought it would be a good thing to do in her name. Anne's two daughters also did the race with us.

“It was a really great day and we have raised around £2,500 which is fantastic.”

Others taking part included Brighton care worker Alison Hunt and her seven-year-old granddaughter Brooke.

Both have suffered the loss of loved ones to cancer in recent years.

Mrs Hunt’s sister Linda died aged just 35 from bowel cancer, and just two months ago her brother-in-law Jim died from a brain tumour.

Brooke lost her granddad on her father’s side to lung cancer last year.

Mrs Hunt, 52, of Old Boat Walk, said: “I walked around the course but Brooke managed to run the whole way around which was great.

“It was a really good day. It was emotional and inspiring to see so many people all there together for the same cause. We'll be doing it again next year and my daughter says she will do it as well.”

Event organisers are now urging people to make sure they send in the money they have raised as soon as possible.
