A greedy seagull bit off more than it could chew after swooping on a pensioner and stealing her dentures.

Renee A'Bear, 92, had taken out her false teeth to eat a biscuit when the pesky gull made its move.

But instead of taking her biscuit the confused bird came away with her set of false teeth.

Realising its mistake the bird spat them out on a nearby roof to the horror of onlookers.

Ms A'Bear, who lives in the Eridge House Residential Home in Richmond Road, Bexhill, spends most afternoons in the garden feeding birds.

Last Wednesday (July 17) she was out enjoying a coffee and biscuit when the pesky seagull struck.

She had taken out her dentures when it swooped and snatched them from the table.

Realising its mistake the bird spat them out on a nearby roof before flying off.

Home manager, Linda Stevens, said: “It was quite upsetting for her at the time but she's ok now.

“They are certainly crafty, all I can think is that the seagull thought the dentures were a biscuit or something.

“She came in crying and a couple of the carers had to use a ladder to get them off the roof.

“She has seen the funny side of things since so it's all ok.”

Rescue

The mischievous seagull was not the only one causing trouble recently.

Trever Weeks, from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS), was called for help after residents came under attack from a pair of protective gulls.

The kind-hearted locals were attempting to rescue a baby gull after it had fallen off the roof of a block of flats in Seaford.

However, their misunderstood efforts went unappreciated by the parents who began to dive-bomb.

Mr Weeks, complete with protective hard hat, was on the scene in minutes.

He said: “It gave me quite the run-around, I ended up rugby tackling it in the end.

“Like us, seagulls are very protective of their young. They had no idea we were trying to help.

“We got the gull back on the roof so it was a happy ending.”
