An Albion fan was left “sick with anger” after Twitter trolls abused her about her weight and looks.
Kayleigh Beckman was subjected to vile taunts by a group of Leeds United supporters following Albion’s controversial 2-1 loss last weekend.
The abuse began after her boyfriend Kevin Ticehurst made an online comment about Leeds United boss Brian McDermott after the game.
Soon vicious Leeds fans soon tracked Kayleigh down and started bombarding the couple with cruel messages about Kayleigh’s appearance.
Kayleigh, 23, said the ordeal had left her “furious”.
She said: “It's sad when people who are over 30 think that picking on a 23- year-old girl for her looks is funny.
“I have a headache and feel sick with anger.
“This abuse over the past two days has been disgusting.
“And in all this time I never said a word about the Brighton game or anything to provoke them.”
When the abusive comments reached five pages long, Kayleigh reported the abuse to football liaison officers with West Yorkshire Police.
She said: “It's clear these people stalked my Twitter enough to find out personal information.
“I actually feel sick that this is allowed to happen.”
Leeds fans who joined in the abuse included profiles under the names @ianjohnbrooke, @davidquearney and @ajdavislufc amongst many others.
A national row erupted over sexist abuse on Twitter last week after a number of prominent women were trolled on the site.
Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, Independent columnist Grace Dent and Europe editor of Time magazine Catherine Mayer, as well as a number of other women, have previously said they had been the subject of bomb threats on the site, while two received threats of rape.
Tony Wang, Twitter UK general manager, posted a series of tweets saying abuse was "simply not acceptable".
His messages came after the website clarified its rules on abusive behaviour and put extra staff in place to handle reports of abuse.
Last Friday 14-year-old Hannah Smith was found hanged at her Leicestershire home after weeks of abuse from trolls.
Tormentors encouraged her to commit suicide with messages including “go cut ur self n die” and “U should commit suicide u ugly f****r no1 would care if ya died u cretin”.
