Eastbourne man is local hero for helping out friend in need

There are two heroes in this tale of friendship.

Rosemary Freeman met David Evans through her volunteer work at Helping You – a group run by three residents offering support to anyone that needs it, including carers, and the elderly.

Mr Evans, 67 from Eastbourne, had a nervous breakdown after leaving his marital home. He struggled more than most because he has cerebral palsy and cannot read and write.

He was put in touch with Mrs Freeman, who helped find him accommodation and to settle in.

The pair met not long after Mrs Freeman’s husband, John, had major heart surgery and needed full-time care.

Mr Evans said: “Rosemary helped me build my confidence back up, and as a result I wanted to give something back.”

For the past two years, Mr Evans has visited the Freeman’s five days a week providing invaluable support.

For ten hours a day he helps with the housework, walking the dogs, and the shopping.

In return, Mrs Freeman helps with any reading or writing that Mr Evans needs help with.

Mrs Freeman, 69, said: “When I first met David he was reluctant to leave the house.

“Now I can’t imagine life without him. He is a massive help, and asks for nothing in return.”

Mr Evans said: “Rosemary helped me out at a time where I was desperate. “I love being able to give something back, and feel honoured to now consider the pair as part of my family.

“I like to give and not take – it is in my nature and no one will ever change me.”

Mr Freeman, 74, said: “It is my aim in life to make my wife happy, and because I cannot do things like the shopping, it makes me so happy that David is around to help out. “In a way, the pair both helps each other out.

“I don’t know what we would do without him.”
