Following the letter regarding speed limits and Mill Road (Argus Letters, August 27), I thought I should explain the progress that has been achieved so far to improve safety in Mill Road for all those who may use it.

I have been working on getting a speed reduction in Mill Road for quite a while but constantly came face-to-face with what I would call “petty bureaucracy”.

However, last year I managed to persuade the powers that be to crosshatch the middle (uphill) lane to stop overtaking and I am pleased to say that all the indications show it has been extremely successful.

I was assured that after an initial one-year trial, which is now up, there would be further speed checks that could lead to a permanent speed reduction for the whole of Mill Road.

I am awaiting the result of those speed checks and hope we can look forward to a maximum of 40mph or even 30mph as I would prefer.

As Mill Road is regularly used by pedestrians to access Waterhall and the South Downs National Park I am also hoping to be able to get a pedestrian refuge in the centre of the road adjacent to the windmill, and signs warning of Pedestrians Crossing to alert motorists.

On the 20mph issue, I think the draconian “blanket” 20mph proposals are just a ridiculous waste of money as it will not be viable to enforce. It would also introduce a massive increase in carbon emissions which I’m certain nobody wants.

Having said that, I do believe 20mph restrictions should be introduced in roads immediately around schools and hospitals. I will only support proposals that recommend those limited proposals.
