They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – just ask copycat artist Malcolm Love.

The 69-year-old has completed a near-copy of a well-known painting in Hove Art Gallery's collection, St John's Church, Palmeira Square, painted in 1950 by Jack Armfield Bindon.

Mr Love’s present-day version was painted from the same high vantage point in Salisbury Road, Hove.

But his painting shows the changes in the urban landscape over 60 years with the different road layout, shops and buses.

He said: “I have chosen a cooler palette and the harder feel of modernity – and I am very pleased with the result.

“I would like to thank the English Language Centre for allowing me up to paint the picture.”
