An endurance swimmer is looking for sponsors to guess how far he will go for charity.

Long-distance swimmer Steve White is asking people to guess how far he can swim in ten hours with the best guess winning £1,000.

The father-of-two has come up with a novel way to make him stand out from the crowd of worthy fundraisers.

The 43-year-old will begin his ten hour Splash 4 Cash swim at 7am tomorrow from Worthing Pier.

He will then swim up the River Arun from Littlehampton Harbour to Arundel before turning around and swimming back to Littlehampton.

The prize money has been put forward by Shoreham Vehicle Auctions and Jeremy Silverthorne Fine Jewellery meaning all the money raised goes straight to Chestnut Tree House and the RNLI.

Mr White, from Old Shoreham Road in East Preston, said: “The problem is fundraising is competitive.

“Everybody is cycling somewhere, running a marathon or climbing up Kilimanjaro with just their chin so I can’t just do another 15 mile swim because everybody knows I can do it.

“What I wanted to do was set up a new approach to fundraising.”

This is not the first time that Mr White has put his body on the line for charity having raised £15,000 in 2011 by completing a 15 mile swim.

In total he has raised about £25,000.

Mr White describes the act of swimming as “therapeutic” for the chronic back condition he has suffered for more than 20 years.

He is also recovering from deep vein thrombosis suffered last year, which has left him with 40% circulation in his leg.

He said: “At the end of it I will be completely shattered, cold, my shoulders will ache and I may have to swim with one arm while I rest the other arm.

“Iamgetting the hardest bit out the way first – going into Littlehampton Harbour against the current is going to be a real battle. It’s the second fastest flowing river in the country. It’s going to take me 90 minutes to swim a few hundred yards.”

He added: “I am wishing now I had said four hours instead of ten.”
