Parking, 20mph speed limits and the upkeep of the city were the big issues for residents at the latest Meet Your Argus event yesterday.

Shoppers at Asda in Hollingbury, Brighton, stopped to chat, rant, vent and discuss concerns with reporter Ben James.

Predictably, one of the big issues for many readers was parking – both in and around Brighton and Hove.

Charlie Walters, 43, from Coldean, said: “I don’t even bother going into town any more, it’s too expensive.

“I don’t mind too much but it’s when you’ve got visitors. It would just be nice to go somewhere for an hour or two and pay a reasonable amount.”

Martha Harris, 67, from Hollingbury, added: “I had to drive around for 10 to 15 minutes when I went to my doctors because I was trying to find a space.

“Someone needs to sort it out.

It’s getting ridiculous.”

But it wasn’t just parking on the agenda, many readers spoke of their dismay at the state of parts of the city.

Wolf Boecher, 70, from Lower Bevendean, said: “We live in a lovely area and our neighbours are great.

“ However , some of the council properties look terrible.

Residents need to do their bit and look after their home. The council should be able to take action if they don’t.”

The introduction of the new 20mph limit also appears to have split residents.

Terry and Patricia MacDonald, both 76, are in favour of the limit.

Terry said: “I think a lot of cars go way too fast around here, I think it is generally a good thing.”

Daphne South, 64, of Hollingbury, disagreed.

She said: “Modern cars aren’t designed to go at that speed. It hasn’t been thought through, it needs looking at again.”

Will Parsons’ main concerns were more likely to be found on the back pages rather than the front.

The 59-year-old from Patcham said: “Albion haven’t had a great start, they need to get going.

“It was a good point last night against QPR but we really need to push on now.

“We really need to be pushing for the play-offs again.”
