I would like to comment on the recent report (The Argus, September 10) concerning the Territorial Army building in Dyke Road, Brighton.

First and foremost, it is not a barracks but a centre for reserve Army training for a number of units.

It is believed this centre was built for the Second World War and, over the years, has been used for many units including artillery, infantry, signals, medical and motor workshops. Cadet units are also based here for venture training, providing youth activities.

If we lose this valuable facility, outside the city centre, it could be hard to replace. There are various educational buildings in the local area from junior level up to sixth-form.

With the rundown of the regular Army’s manpower and a build-up of the reserve forces, this building is essential in achieving this, covering as it does a large catchment area.

Over many years, it has been used for other purposes, such as Christmas postal sorting, a polling station and social events.

The building’s location, on a wide road, is essential for large vehicles and trailers. A school on this site on a main road route out of town brings safety and noise problems.

The MOD are right to turn down this suggestion for disposal. The Army doesn’t often get it right but it has on this occasion.
