Well done to Tim Ridgway reporting on the proposed ten-year lease for Segway motorised vehicles on Beacon Hill in Rottingdean (The Argus, September 26).

The local community knew nothing about this application being considered by Brighton and Hove City Council. So much for so-called “community consultation”.

Perhaps councillors will now read the online votes on the website of The Argus, showing 23% in favour, 7% not knowing and a whopping 70% against this development which threatens the best wildlife preservation area in Brighton and the most scenic walking grassland in the city.

YouTube footage online shows multiple crashes and injuries. The machines have been banned from public places by the UK’s Department for Transport. They have been classified as dangerously unstable and likely to injure riders.

Even the British owner of Segway lost his life when he failed to control his own Segway machine and it drove him over a cliff. Google “Segway accidents” and you’ll see all this online.

A proposed development for these human tractors is just 25 yards from Rottingdean cliff and a 50m drop. It is actually adjacent to the A259 road, with direct access via a car park to the proposed Segway site. Beacon Hill slopes directly down to the road and cliff edge.

Imagine a Segway stag party deciding to go “off piste” along this main road – it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
