An Eastbourne man banned from driving six times has been jailed for six weeks.

Nicholas Ward, 38, of Helvellyn Drive, Eastbourne, was stopped and arrested heading northbound on the M23 near Crawley, in a Vauxhall Astra van on September 20 after officers were told he was driving illegally.

When questioned Ward admitted not having a licence and was charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court recently, where he was also given another two year ban.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “It is the sixth time Ward has been disqualified from driving, after being convicted of drink-driving but then ignoring the ban and continuing to get behind the wheel.”

Inspector Carl Knapp, of Sussex Police's road policing unit, said: “Those who get behind the wheel while banned show a clear disregard for the courts.

“It is quick and easy for police officers to check if a motorist is driving illegally so by ignoring your sentence you put yourself in danger of going to prison.”
