The impressive Royal Sussex Regiment war memorial stands at the foot of Regency Square in Brighton.
It was unveiled by the Marquess of Abergavenny in 1904 and I think this picture must be of that event.
The memorial, carved from Portland stone, is topped by a bugler made of bronze and four artillery shells. It overlooks King’s Road and has weathered well.
It commemorates the 152 men from the regiment who died in the Boer War in South Africa at the turn of the 20th century.
Later its remit was widened to include men lost in other conflicts including both world wars.
