Free parking plans in the run up to Christmas moved a step closer last night after councillors backed the idea.
In an effort to provide a boost to small high street shops, Brighton and Hove City Council has agreed to draw up firm plans to look at lifting the charges on some of its city centre car parks in December.
The Green administration was opposed to the move claiming it would cost between £200,000 and £300,000.
But, after the Conservative plan received backing from Labour members at a town hall meeting last night, officials have now been told to go away and bring back detailed plans in a matter of weeks.
The aim is to provide free parking at Norton Road, London Road, Regency Square, High Street in Kemp Town and Trafalgar Street car parks on Saturday, December 7 and on the three Sundays before Christmas (December 8, 15 and 22).
