My 14-year-old daughter was travelling on the 81C bus towards Meadowview, in Bevendean, Brighton, last Sunday.

When starting to descend the stairs she slipped and fell the entire way down to the bottom deck, bruising her back and her ego badly.

I can perhaps understand the driver not being able to leave the cab to check that she was OK but not one single passenger asked if she was all right.

Where is our concern for our neighbours these days?

I was really disgusted that no one could be bothered to check she hadn’t hurt herself badly.

What about elderly people? Do they fare any better?

I recently returned from the US, where everyone is friendly and eager to help. This trip highlighted what a miserable lot we Brits are.

And, yes, I do plan to emigrate, thank you.
