Controversal transport plans to extend 20 mph zones across Brighton and Hove wil be unveiled today.

Since Brighton and Hove City Council launched a public consultation  in September, nearly 13,000 people have commented on the proposal.

It will expand the current speed limits to also include areas including Kemp Town, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, and parts of Portslade, Hangleton, Withdean, Hollingbury and Patcham.

The proposals will be scrutinised at the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on Tuesday.

With three working days to go until the meeting, yesterday officers had not yet produced a report for councillors to consider.

Opposition groups said they were in the dark about the council’s plans.

Last night Labour councillor Gill Mitchell said: “It is a disgrace. The Greens are refusing to budge from their position but they will not tell us what the report will say.

“We have had very sketchy briefings from officers. If they go ahead with extending the speed limit across the city the bus company will not be able to operate efficiently.

“This city does not have trams, it does not have an underground. It has buses. If the Greens want people to get out of their cars and on to buses, they will have to think again about extending 20mph at all hours.”

Former leader of the Conservative group Councillor Mary Mears said: “My understanding is it will be a late report.

“Bearing in mind everything that is happening at the moment, as an administration, I would have thought they would want the report out in good time for openness and transparency.”

A spokeswoman for the Green Party said: “Councillor Mitchell requested a cross-party meeting to discuss proposals and try and find agreement. The meeting took place as soon as possible given councillors’ busy diaries.

“It is disappointing that Coun Mitchell is trying to play politics with a process that she requested, and which most councillors entered in the spirit of seeking the best solution for the residents of the city.”

The report is expected to be published today.
