23-year-old woman raped by stranger on the beach

A 23-year-old woman was raped  by a stranger on the beach after a night out.

The victim had left a nearby nightspot to sit by the sea when she was approached by a man in his 20s on Brighton beach who had dark hair and who spoke with a foreign accent.

After carrying out the attack he stood up and ran off.

The attack took place to the west of the Palace Pier between 3am and 4am on Sunday morning.

The woman approached a jogger for help and then a nightclub doorman who rang the police.

Detective Inspector Lee Horner, of Brighton CID, said: "I want to reassure the public that all allegations of this nature are taken very seriously and, as in this case, a large number of police officers are being used to gather all available evidence.

"The victim is currently helping police to piece together the events and she is being supported by specialist officers."

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the beach or Pool Valley between 3am and 4am, and who saw anything suspicious or who may have other information.

Police officers were scouring the beach for clues yesterday.

A small area of the beach was cordoned off as scenes of crime officers forensically searched amid the pebbles.

A worker who left a nearby bar around the same time the attack was reported to have taken place said he was shocked.

Miguel Simpson, 25, bar manager of Ohso Social on the beachfront, said: “It’s a massive shock for everyone here, especially as it’s happened at the week- end when we are all leaving quite late.

“Last night we had a Christmas party and left at about 3.30am. It’s not a very nice thought at all.

“It’s definitely something to be wor- ried about.

“This is the first time I remember anything like this happening after two years of working here.

Witnesses should call Sussex Police on 101.

Rape in quotes?! Let me tell you what 'rape' says to me instantaneously. It makes me feel as if no-one was RAPED. That perhaps the woman was at fault for being RAPED. That perhaps the woman lied about being RAPED. This is exactly why rape culture is on the rise- it's because you all try to make RAPE seem like nothing. ALL THE TIME.

Can we just get one thing clear, whilst the alleged attacker in this case may have spoken with a foreign accent, the correlation between a predispostion to rape and not being British ends there. The Argus has reported the facts as stated to them, but some of the comments above boarder on incitement to racial hatred and by publishing them the Argus is complicit.

Because some people want to live their lives not in constant fear that some scumbag is going to attack you when you're at your most vulnerable?

Perhaps you might rephrase your question to "Why would any young man go to the beach at 3-4am in the morning looking to rape a woman????!"

We need to aggressively educate and target young men about how to treat women rather than aggressively educating women to be scared about going out at night.

You dont seem to like freedom of speech Brightstar, its not racist to express concern about foreigners coming here and commiting crimes, when in doubt cry racism eh!

Both points are extrememly true and valid, but what are individuals more able to control that reduce their personal risk to this type of crime:

a) Reduce chances of attack by not walking unaccompanied at times and in places where they may be at risk, when at all possible?
b) Local, National and Global campaign to educate those of a criminal disposition and/or psychological abnormalities to stop committing these crimes.

The latter equally needs to be done, but the two are not mutually exclusive and I know what message I will be reiterating to my friends and family.

It really annoys me when I read comments saying women shouldn't go out at night because they risk being raped. Rape can happen at any time of day - this was a late night attack but it could just as easily happen on a dark winter morning or any other time.

A nine year old girl was raped in broad daylight when I was at school in some local playing fields. Was it her fault? Of course not. Does that mean no child can ever go to the park just in case?

Men can also be rape victims - it's rarer but it happens. When it does, I never read comments saying men should stay in at night.

Exactly. The reason it is so infuriating is that by saying "what was she doing down the beach at that time of night???" is insinuating that it was in some way her fault...It is not her fault. I have no idea why she was down the beach at that time of night but I can tell you with certainty that she did not go onto the beach to get raped. This girl is going through hell, no doubt and the last thing she needs is to be victim blamed when it was not her fault in the slightest. As voice of truth says, people can get raped at any time of day or night....and in their own homes! So it does nothing to suggest that women would just be safer if they stayed in at night- a ludicrous suggestion.
Clearly with the spate of rapes down Brighton Seafront over the past year, there needs to be much heavier policing down there as a preventative measure.

Yes, I really feel for this girl and imagine she is already beating herself up about it wondering if it is her fault. Well it's not, it's her attackers fault. He is the only one to blame. I just hope she doesn't read some of inconsiderate comments written on here.
