"Vinnie" sought over sex attack

The Argus: "Vinnie" sought over sex attack "Vinnie" sought over sex attack

Police have released a CCTV image of a man wanted in connection with a serious sex attack in an alleyway.

The suspect, thought to be Irish and called Vinnie, tried to rape an 18-year-old woman in Portland Road, Hove.

The victim was out with friends in Brighton on Saturday, November 23, and met the suspect in the Fiddler's Elbow pub in Boyces Street.

She, a friend, the suspect and an unknown witness left the pub at closing time around 3am and walked along Western Road, into Blatchington Road and Portland Road, stopping to buy chips on the way.

In Hove the victim became seperated from her friend and the unknown man.

At an alleyway by the tattoo shop in Portland Road she was pushed against the wall and sexually assaulted.

She pushed her attacker away but he pushed her to the ground, pinned her down and attempted to rape her.

He was disturbed by a noise and she managed to escape and run off.

Detective Constable Paul Clements said: "This was obviously a very frightening experience for this young woman and we are very keen to speak to a man who we believe can help us with our investigation.

"He is believed to be known as Vinnie or Vincent and frequents Irish-themed bars in Brighton city centre.

"We have just obtained a photo of him taken by a security camera in the Fiddler's Elbow that evening.

"He is white, in his mid-20s, 5' 7", of medium build, with dark hair, facial stubble and speaks with an Irish accent. He was wearing a check shirt and cable jumper and was carrying an iPad.

"We would also like to speak to the unknown man who was in the pub and walked part of the way with the group after leaving it."

Witnesses should call Sussex Police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 241 of 23/11.

The first comment was posted when the word "Road" was omitted from the article, hence the highlighting of poor proof reading on the part of the website maintenance monkeys. It should have been correct from the start.

It didn't when it was first published online. Corrections are often done after the first comment on the typographical errors.

When is this going to stop? Seriously we need to start giving females those rape-com things, you know like a female condom but with metal spikes so if someone does try to rape a women wearing one it will get suck on their dick and the only way to remove it will to be at the hospital where the police will be called instantly and the person will be caught there and then!

Or young women shouldn't be walking around the worse for wear with strange men at 3 in the morning. Theres an element of common sense in this.

Just a variant on the old 'it was the woman's fault' garbage really. What are these women thinking of, walking around when and where they like? Anyone would think it was a free country or something.

It's hardly saying it's the women's fault! I'm just saying IF women decided to wear these things it would: a) cut the amount of rapes & b) catch more rapists! But to be honest who in their right mind walks along when drunk with a complete stranger in the early hours?

Actually you are victim blaming. Women have every right to go out at night. In fact, it's probably safer to have other women on the streets than make them become a complete no go area for women. If you read the story, you will see she was with a friend for most of the journey.

Are women supposed to view every man as a rapist and never talk to them in bars or trust them in any way? I know many men who would be extremely offended by this.

And I've said it before but I will say it again. Rapes do not just happen at night. They can happen at any time night or day. In fact, in most rape cases, the woman knows the person involved - this is much more common than stranger rape.

Telling women not to go out at night is not the solution. Also why do you say 'young women'. Do you think older women are never targetted by rapists?
