Worthing Lib Dem councillor defects to UKIP

The Argus: Trevor England Trevor England

A Worthing liberal democrat councillor has crossed the floor to join the UK Independence Party.

Worthing borough councillor Trevor England has swapped yellow for purple to become the town's second Ukip councillor.

He follows in the footsteps of the lead of Conservative former Mayor Charles James who became Worthing's first Ukip councillor in July.

Coun England was elected for the Liberal Democrats in 2010 for four years and is up for re-election next year.

He said: “Having also looked at the local Conservative party, it became clearer to me that too many councillors nowadays are under duress to obey a particular party line.

“UKIP's distinct policy of not whipping its councillors, but letting them champion the views of the local residents, was the clincher in the end.”

Didn't UKIP claim a few years back that when a serving councillor joins them, they would call a by-election rather than simple defection and retention of the seat?

Can't trust any of them to keep their word.

Errr.... Yes they did, it was included in their recall policy, a policy which they claim that their members abide by.

Seems to have an appropriate surname too, let's face it leaving the useless LibDems was hardly a difficult decision anyway. I'm glad UKIP are ruffling feathers it might help the other complacent parties wake up to people's actual concerns for once.

I hear he is changing his name to Trevor Little-Englander.

He is right to complain about the stifling control freakery of the LibLabCons, particularly the later two. However, to join a one-man dictatorial party even more nasty than the Tories, a party that would even privatise their grannies and has a reputation for snouts in the trough, is terrible.

Wow! One extra Councillor - that makes 6 in the whole country.

Prediction: UKIP will do well in the Euro elections in 2014 (how ironic) and then will fade away in the 2015 General Election - just as the Greens, the Lib Cons, the unspeakable fascists and the SDP have done in the past.

As for Little Englanders - no, UKIP are just little and always will be, with their loony, racist members.

Basically this councillor knows the voters are fed up of the much the same so called three main parties, they all say one thing for our votes then ignore us when in power.Vote on the EU is important with voter and only UKIP will give that,CAMERON WONT its just a ploy for votes. The other main issue is IMMIGRATION as everyone knows that the pressure on ALL our public services from school places ,NHS,benefits, housin
g etc is mainly due to the massive influx of immigrants without public services provided for them.Immigration is needed but controlled the three main parties avoid immigration issues as they know they are to blame.CAMERON is trying to rush in changes as he has realised people are turning away from the concervatives but he has left it too late as the next massive influx of immigrants have there bags packed ready for the new year.

They have many ethnic minority members. Have you checked out the video on their website lately? Don't let that get in the way of your bigoted rant though.

Coming from a trade unionist - you know, those organisations run by people like Scargill and Crowe - that call members scabs if they dare object I don't think you're in a place to validly comment.

Especially as you try and rig elections.

I'll add that many trade unions have publicly stated that membership of the EU drives down the wages of the lowest paid in the UK - so you and UKIP do actually agree on something.
