17C Rottingdean barn could be converted into a home

The Argus: Kipling Gardens Kipling Gardens

A 17th century barn which neighbours a famous author's garden is set to be converted into a home.

Developers have submitted plans to make changes to the 400-year-old Hillside Barn in The Green, Rottingdean.

The building, which was part of Westside Farm and looks onto Kipling's Gardens, is currently used as stables.

But The Graham Watts Partnership, which has submitted the proposal, claims it will create the finance to secure the future of the building, which forms a key part of the village's heritage.

A decision is set to be taken by January 27.

Not sure that you can actually see Kipling Gardens from this barn. Furthermore, it would appear that the planning request is for - Conversion of stables attached to barn to form 1no two storey dwelling house and alterations to the barn incorporating structural repairs and re-roofing of whole barn. A follow on request is for some alterations to the barn but not for conversion for a house. It will be interesting to see what happens in the end. Personally, I support such conversions to bring properties into use.
