It's enough to scramble your brains. A couple in Hove were stunned when they started making breakfast and discovered all half a dozen eggs in the same pack had double yolks.
David and Julia Warnes bought the pack of Woodland free range eggs from Sainsbury’s in Portland Road.
Little did they expect that rather than having poultry single-yolked eggs, they would get double delight with all six.
Mrs Warnes, 46, said: “It was a funny old experience.
“It was my husband who found the first one as he was making the breakfast – a ‘yolk’ in itself. He called me over and said he had a double yolk.
“I'd never seen one before so I went and had a look and then he cracked the next one, which was the same.
“I had to grab a picture so I took one of the two eggs in the pan, then cracked the next and it was a double too. Same with the fourth.
“We were just going to sit down and eat but then I said, just supposing the others are doubles too? So, we cracked the last two in the pan and we had six eggs from one box, all with double yolks.
“I was stunned.”
But Mrs Warnes admitted despite the excitement the incident had put her off eggs for a while.
Double yolk eggs occur when ovulation occurs too rapidly, or when one yolk becomes joined with another yolk. These eggs may be the result of a young hen’s reproductive cycle not yet being synchronized.
Some hybrid breeds of hens also produce double yolk eggs by default.
Have you ever had a pack full of double yoked eggs? What did you make with them?
