Recently, Katy Bourne told the Parliamentary select committee that the position of a police and crime commissioner was a “fantastic opportunity”.
In responding to a questions about her “mandate” Ms Bourne felt the question was “irrelevant”. She replied, “What’s a mandate? Is it one vote or a 1,000?”
Katy said that comparing the PCC to the former police authority was like “oranges and pears” – although she appointed the former (Tory) chair of the police authority as her deputy.
For myself, the most disturbing revelation came when Katy Bourne said PCCs should have the right to appoint a deputy in the same way as “the Prime Minister appoints his deputy”.
Since the deputy PCC for Sussex has recently stood down, I wonder who the next Tory appointee will be.
