I feel that it would be a serious misjudgement for Brighton and Hove City Council to introduce charges for groups who wish to use public spaces in the city (The Argus, January 9).

There could be considerable administrative costs and complexities involved with charging organised groups who wish to use our parks and other public spaces such as the beach.

It is not clear who would be charged for such activities, where such charges would apply and when. This could be the “thin end of the wedge” as regards public access in our city.

We are supposed to be promoting fitness so it seems wrong to be making further charges on people who get together voluntarily to help promote our public health.

There is plenty of space on the seafront and in our public parks for everyone.

We are meant to be a forward-looking city that aims to attract visitors for the benefit of all concerned.
