What a joke that Brighton and Hove City Council is going to fund the i360 Doughnut (The Argus, January 18) – that’s what it should be called.

When the council cannot afford to pay our dustmen, it rubs this in their faces. My 90-year-old father-in-law has not had his bin emptied for weeks because of no staff or lorry.

I have never seen people queueing to go on the Brighton Wheel, so why is the council convinced people are going to flock to the i360? It would be interesting to know what money the Wheel has made.

And why does the council think our seafront needs regenerating? The last time I went it was heaving.

The council should build more things for families, such as the children’s area near the West Pier. That’s always busy and it’s free.

Aside from the loan, how much is the Doughnut going to cost?

If this 139m tower is ever built it, will be a brutally stark reminder, visible from throughout this and other conservation areas, that £36 million of public money has not been spent on keeping our streets clear of rubbish, our pavements appropriately repaired and our heritage protected.
