The Argus: Reports A27 closed westbound Reports A27 closed westbound

A car “overturned” on the A27 today.

Members of the public reported the car flipped over at 3.35pm on the westbound carriageway of the main road, near the Southwick Tunnel.

A second crash then occurred on the eastbound carriageway, police said.

A Sussex Police spokesman said tonight: “A car travelling west on the A27 hit the central reservation just before the entrance to the Southwick Tunnel and spun round. No other vehicles were involved and there is no current report of any injuries.

"One westbound lane was still open and there have been westbound delays but the Highways Agency are currently repairing the barrier.

"The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and is being taken to custody for interview and further enquiries.”

Referring to the second crash, they said: “There was a further but unrelated single car RTC on the westbound carriageway of the A27 near the Hangleton slip shortly before 4.30pm when a car hit the central reservation. The 30-year old woman driving the car is believed to have sustained slight injuries.”

At the same time a large piece of fabric caused traffic problems after it floated across the A27 at Patcham – but no delays were reported.

Yes, surely they must now have proper investigations into what goes on around there?

perhaps if the driver wasn't drink driving we wouldn't be here discussing what needs looking into/not?!

Yes I did read the article but it still seems strange to me that so many accidents happen in this vicinity, whatever the causes.

Maybe it is time for some big chevrons down the central reservation just to help those who can't follow the wide strip of tarmac in front of them negotiate something called a bend. Drunk or otherwise, there's a lot of stupidity round there and I'm sick of keep getting held up because of it.
Modern cars seem to take a lot of responsibility away from the driver with all sorts of gadgets that turn the lights and wipers on and off without any input and are full of fun things to do that don't involve actually driving. The idiot factor will only be fully compensated for when the car drives itself and the numpty responsible for it is asleep on the back seat.
21st century motoring sucks.

when I commentated on the article it was breaking news, just saying that Southwick tunnel was closed due to another accident no details had been given, nothing about drink driver being arrested (yes I can read properly )
I still stand my ground there are still far too many accidents in this area and should be seriously looked in

Thank you to all of those who have made me realise how dangerous the Southwick Tunnel and its approaches are. I have been driving through it in both directions ever since it was opened and never noticed before! I'm amazed I'm still here. I really will have to be a lot more careful of those dreadful bends an optical illusions now.
