Portslade primary school-aged pupils are bullying one another on Facebook.

Parents of pupils at Benfield Primary School have complained that pupils are making “nasty remarks” about their offspring online.

The school said children should not even be using Facebook under the age of 13 and asked parents to monitor what their children are doing online.

In a letter to parents the school in Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, said: “We have had a couple of incidents recently where parents have complained about their children having nasty remarks about them made online.

“I am sure you are aware that the use of Facebook should be for 13-year-olds or over and it is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children’s use of social media including phones and playing games online.

“We will be putting further guidance on our website to support you.”

Yesterday the school declined to comment, saying it had nothing to add to the letter.

The Priory School in Mountview Road, Lewes, also warned about social media use online.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Tony Smith said: “We are experiencing an increasing number of issues with mobile phones and other electronic items.

“We are happy for students to use phones before and after school but must insist that they are turned off and put away during the school hours.

“Sadly some young people use phones to engage in antisocial behaviour. Also there are some who use phones in lessons which detracts from learning.”

Speaking to The Argus, Mr Smith said: “There are a lot of different types of social media which young people are using. They can be used in an anti-social way.

“It’s a general thing that can affect a lot of different schools.”

Why are children even taking phones into school?
Whay does a 13 year old even need a phone?

It's a distractor from education. Teachers should be confiscating them & locking them in a drawer till the end of school, just like the old days.
Many a conker, yoyo and kazoo was lost to teachers drawer.

Here’s an idea why don’t angry parents take some
responsibility for their own children.

I also think children should learn how to take and
cope with “nasty remarks” .
Children need to learn to laugh them off ,
get on with your life and don’t play at being a victim .

After all these ”nasty remarks” wont just stop when you are an adult.
Who will the parents blame then.

I do accept aggressive/ physical bullying is different , but if you react to ”nasty remarks “ then you could eventually be a target for a real bully .

This is all part of the softening and molly-coddling of the people of this country that has been going on for far too long. As @a person states people should start taking responsibility and manning-up to even the slightest remark.

Bunch of woosies.
