The debate concerning the i360 viewing tower rattles on but it’s nothing new.
We recently found a wonderful book called Brighton: The Sixties by Christopher Horlock.
In it we read that in 1964 the Brighton Herald reported that the town’s planning committee was considering plans for “a massive tower to stand between the piers on the seafront. Costing one million pounds, it would be known as The Skydeck. Gleaming like a sliver rocket by day, aglow from the restaurant decking at night, and outrageously modern, it will attract thousands just for the chance to see the unrivalled view from the observation decking 600ft from the sea”.
Apparently the tower would have been 1,000ft high and built at the end of a 300ft pier and have three lifts to carry the thousands who would flock to visit it.
It all sounds a bit pie in the sky to me. Sound familiar?
I would far rather money was spent mending potholes or even re-surfacing our roads, although I’ve been told there aren’t the funds for that...
