I agree with Mr Gumbrill in laying the blame for the destruction of the West Pier with the council leaders and councillors (Letters, February 13).

The pier was flogged off in 1965 to Brighton hoteliers but nothing happened. Then the old Brighton Corporation refused to buy it and abandoned it to the elements and vandalism.

There is no West Pier, only an appalling and hideous pile of rusting and dangerous scrap metal.

However, scrap metal has a high price today so flog it to scrap-metal dealers and let’s have an end to all this delusional and pseudo-romantic nonsense about grand old ladies and iconic landmarks.

The only decent thing the city council should do is remove the lamentable remains from the sight of all of us.
