Adur District Council cuts council tax by one percent

The Argus: Adur District Council cuts council tax by one percent Adur District Council cuts council tax by one percent

Thousands of households will be better off this year after Adur District Council took the decision to cut council tax by one per cent.

The official announcement came tonight at a full council meeting and came completely out of the blue for some of those gathered in the chamber.

It is the first time in four years the local authority has decided to reduce taxes for residents having taken the decision to freeze rates in the previous three.

The one per cent cut will reduce bills for a Band D home - valued between £68,001 and £88,000 - from £1,516.41 a year to £1,497.25 a year and according to council leader Neil Parkin, is a testament to the hard work of its members.

“As a Conservative controlled council, we believe in low taxes,” he said. “After freezing council tax for three successive years, I am now absolutely delighted that this year we are able to cut it by one per cent.

“The council has worked hard over the last few years to reduce our costs in the face of the government's austerity plan and still deliver the services that our resident's value.

"This year we have managed to balance our budget and have some money left over, which we are giving back to our residents.”

According to the latest figures, Adur District Council has saved more than £13 million in seven years, working in partnership with Worthing Borough Council.

Among the major savings made is a 56 per cent drop in management costs with a new structure expected to cost £807,960 in the next year compared with £2.2 million in 2007/08.

It was also claimed that Adur is the only council in West Sussex that has reduced tax bills in the past four years.

Coun Parkin added: “We hope this is the first of many reductions.”

Well, back in the mid nineties when they were wondering what to do with Hove and Portslade after they abolished Hove Borough Council - the main, and preferred proposal was to incorporate Hove and Portslade into Adur district. The 'bottom of the barrel' option was to lump us in with Brighton council and create a new unitary 'Brighton and Hove' district.

Us Hove and Portslade residents campaigned unanimously to be included in Adur District, knowing full well that incorporation into 'Brighton and Hove' would result in our towns being sidelined and brushed over, and constantly referred to as 'Brighton' (which hasn't got any better since the district was applied with city status).

However, it seems that the principle of self-determination that the UK government keep banging on about for Gibraltar and The Falkland Islands didn't apply to people in the Borough of Hove, and despite an OVERALL MAJORITY (78%) voting NOT to jump into bed with Brighton and to join Adur District - our right to self-determination was ignored, and we ended up part of 'Brighton and Hove'.

Since then Hove and Portslade have been governed and considered as nothing more that 'districts' of Brighton rather than towns in their own right, and all the focus and bulk of investment and marketing has been biased towards Brighton proper. Even the council's own tourism website is called visitBrighton and constantly referred to the city of Brighton this, city of Brighton that.

Had Hove and Portslade been part of Adur District as was originally intended and preferred, then we would have lower council tax, much cleaner towns, much more attention and investment, and we would be free from the looney lefty marxist car-hating Green administration who represent a small sect of people far removed from the demographics of Hove and Portslade.

So, the time has come for Hove and Portslade to FINALLY divorce itself from brash, lefty, filthy Brighton and join Adur. So all those MP's and Councillors who CLAIM to represent us...LISTEN TO US AND LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
