Once again the politically correct minority have conquered the majority.

I refer to the approval of an expansion to the travellers’ site situated north of Patcham on the edge of Brighton.

More than 3,500 signatures were gathered in petitions against this development on our South Downs.

With Patcham Village on the brink of flooded this will only make matters worse. The transit site is regularly flooding and being closed due to vandalising of the facilities.

There could be up to 80 people living on this new site, putting a massive strain on local schools. The people of the South Downs National Park Authority who approved this abysmal plan should hang their heads in shame. They are supposed to be the custodians of the Downs and the people who live within them.

To say I’m appalled is an understatement.

How our council can show such arrogance and complete disrespect for the wishes of its constituents is beyond me.

To establish a 12-pitch “permanent” travellers’ site (contradiction of term) at taxpayers’ expense, where it will not make any reasonable difference, is a travesty.

The travelling communities will continue to park up unchallenged in our parks.

No doubt the mismanagement of funds will continue to the tune of £1.8 million, with the proposed hike of council tax wasted in the process. Who will bring some financial sanity and sound judgement back to our city?

T Ingram, Brighton

Regarding the impact of a permanent traveller site on the number of unauthorised encampments in the city, in The Argus last Friday, Tory councillor Geoffrey Theobald said: “The permanent site will not reduce the number of unauthorised encampments.”

However, in an opinion piece in The Argus on Thursday, July 24, 2008, he said: “A single fixed site would reduce the number of unauthorised travellers’ encampments around the city.”

What can have happened to change Coun Theobald’s mind so dramatically?

There are only two things I can think of: In 2008 Brighton and Hove City Council’s administration was Conservative, yet in 2014 it is Green. In 2008 the proposal was to put the permanent site in a ward represented by Labour but in 2014 it’s proposed to be in a ward represented by Coun Theobald himself.

So, which is it, Geoffrey? Is it that you only feel the need to help solve the city’s problems when your party’s in power, or is it just old-fashioned nimbyism?

Councillor Leo Littman, Green, Preston Park ward, Brighton and Hove City Council

Does the council think this site will stop other travellers coming to the city?

Nobody seems to care what we think around here. We fought this for years but still it was built. Who will look after us?

And another thing: the site is called Ewe Bottom, not Horsdean or Braypool Lane.
