Thousands left without phones or internet as cable thieves strike in Brighton

More than a thousand people are thought to be without phone or internet connections after thieves made off with copper wiring.

BT technicians are on the scene in Preston Park attempting to restore the connections.

Up to 7000 lines are thought to have been affected and workman hope to have at least 1200 back up today.

According to residents, areas within Withdean, Westdean and Hove are also affected.

BT are urging people to come forward having posted fliers through doors in the affected areas offering a £1,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to a conviction.

There was a wave of attacks on BT lines in September last year with thieves ripping out internet and phone cables to the cost of thousands of households and businesses.

BT has teamed up with Crimestoppers and Smartwater to attempt to deal with the theft and vandalism of phone lines.

Certain parts of the cabling system are marked with forensic tags in an to attempt to foil thieves.

Anyone with information about the theft should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Perhaps some sort of solution where the council pays 'protection money' for people familiar with such crimes to be on the lookout for metal thieves?

It would help if the access to these lines was secured! In so many streets you can see the flimsy cabinet door either entirely missing or open or ripped off and stowed behind them.

People should use phone cameras in the street when they see things that strike them as odd....just in case. Were all these stripped out in the dead of night or daytime I am wondering....

HJ says the Greens are bound to get the blame for this, what with us inviting all the undesirables into Brighton, encouraging travelers and turning hotels into drug hostels etc. I think HJ may be right and regrettably in turn, I think the Greens are to blame.

Funnily enough I have just been door dropped the Green propaganda leaflet titled.. ' LETS DO WHAT'S RIGHT AND LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE'

When I read it, it reminded me of my uncle Jason and the time he blew
the family savings on his drinking mates and TAT. When aunt Caroline found out he blamed everyone bar himself and asked relatives to contribute some money to restore the savings.

The family who knew him refused as they were irritated by his actions and based on past behaviour and his attitude knew he would do the same again with their money.

HJ is that what Kitty will do with our hard earned?

As one of the homes without internet in Preston park I agree that bt should make the equipment more secure bearing in mind the type of people the greens encourage to come here.

We had the dry risers stolen from our block presumably for the metal value. We are constantly asking residents not to let strangers in yet only last week the greens had the cheek to blag their way into our block & knock on all the doors despite being asked to leave by the management

They aren't listening or thinking & the sooner they go the better for everyone who lives in Brighton

Metal theft is a very big problem. There are so many involved in it. The thieves, who are never hit hard enough when they are caught! The people who deal in the metal, too much cash in hand, and again penalties are not high enough. Too much freedom of movement and not enough control at the borders.
Just saying you are not being racist does not make your comments non-racist and the theft of this cabling is more likely to have been carried out by white, English, young men.

How do you suggest cabling is made more secure? Encase the whole lot in concrete?

And again, this is just as likely to have been carried out by locals as anyone else.

Keep race out of this debate. It has nothing to do with it.

The real issue is sentencing. Get a cage and throw anyone convicted of cable theft tin for 25 year in the same cage. I'm so sick of the excuses for such anti-social behaviour and the endless line of apologists justifying it. Oh and as travellers have been rightly or wrongly mentioned in this case, I think it wrong that no comments are allowed on traveller stories. Why should they be treated as beyond reproach?
