Early last week, when driving up Ditchling Road in Brighton, signs were displayed indicating roadworks ahead.

The initial reaction was that, at last, repairs to the surfaces around Carden Avenue were under way. Most of these predate the recent rain conveniently blamed for potholes.

Over the next few days, I saw that the work was for the grass verges above Woodbourne Avenue and what appears to be a new cycleway under construction.

True to form, like most other cycleways in Brighton and Hove, it is not connected to a network and one wonders, when users reach its end, how they will continue their journey.

At a time when road surfaces in Brighton and Hove resemble untended mountain tracks (pointed out in Letters on February 20) it beggars belief that Brighton and Hove City Council can be so insensitive to the dangers and discomfort of all road and footpath users in the city by allowing this construction, which at best will be used by few and make no contribution to the local economy.
