Janice Atkinson and Ray Finch of Ukip make a number of misleading statements in their Soapbox (The Argus, February 20).

In particular, they say it is Nato, not the EU, which has kept peace in Europe, the same Nato which stood by while George Bush and Tony Blair waged war with Iraq.

The political benefit of partnership within the EU is that peace is achieved by consensus. That is why the Balkan states, Turkey and the democratic opposition in the Ukraine are all seeking or achieving membership of the EU.

As for “the lies...by vested corporate interests”, I presume they include the CBI, the Institute of Directors and other responsible corporate bodies who all favour continued membership of the EU on economic grounds, which will offer continued and improving prosperity to us all. Their highly selective examples on employment have no basis in statistical fact.

Back to the drawing board, Ukip. After the first flush of protest votes people will quickly see through your arguments.
