Saddlescombe Farm is once again a working farm with sheep and cattle.
It is owned by the National Trust, as is Newtimber Hill and Devil’s Dyke.
As we approach the lambing season, I would like to remind all dog-owners that dogs have to be kept on a lead at all times around livestock (as per National Trust bylaws).
We have already had problems with sheep-worrying, which includes chasing as well as biting and, in some cases, killing and causing abortion.
A farmer has the right to shoot dogs worrying livestock.
Our sheep were chased to exhaustion over Newtimber Hill, with the police being called to stop them getting on to the A23, which could have caused a major accident.
We do realise most dog owners are responsible but when a person is walking up to 12 dogs, how do you expect to be in control?
The country is to be enjoyed but remember that countryside means farmland, so expect to see livestock and very soon, more so, vulnerable lambs.
Mrs Bennett, Saddlescombe Farm, Poynings
