I would like to reply to the comments made by Nick Head regarding the conversion of the Royal York Hotel into a youth hostel (The Argus, February 20).
Mr Head regards the use of the site as “not such a good idea for such an important and historic building”. I would like to reassure Mr Head, and anyone else concerned about the use of the Royal York as a youth hostel, that it is an excellent use for such a historic and beautiful building.
We have considerable experience of running successful hostels, some of which are heritage and listed buildings.
YHA will transform the feel and energy while ensuring its history is fully respected.
We expect hundreds of young people to experience this hostel and the city every year, bringing life to the former hotel and ensuring its long-term viability.
We are looking forward to YHA Brighton opening and would really like Mr Head to visit and see what we have achieved when it does.
Caroline White, chief executive, YHA England and Wales
