I noted that The Argus recently included a public notice from Brighton and Hove City Council about a “contraflow” cycle lane on the west side of Queen’s Road between Brighton Station and Upper Gloucester Road.

These official notices are often not presented in plain English so it is sometimes difficult to work out exactly what they mean.

In this case, it appears the Green Party administration is trying to push through an idea for a cycle lane against the flow of traffic (including buses, taxis and delivery vehicles) on the west side of an important road from the station to the Clock Tower.

Another public notice of this kind, published last year, suggested allowing street trading on the Memorial Way part of the Old Steine, mainly for remembrance purposes.

Both of these issues can be regarded as controversial so deserve to be given a full public airing.
