Hundreds of book lovers descended on Hove to meet best-selling children's author Jacqueline Wilson at a special event.

The hugely popular writer, who created the character Tracy Beaker, spoke to young fans and signed copies of her latest book at All Saints Chuich in The Drive, Hove.

he event was organised by Julie Ward and Vanessa Lewis, who own the Book Nook in First Avenue.

Ms Ward said: “We had 500 tickets and they sold out almost immediately.
“We had a queue of people going around the block to get in on Saturday afternoon. People started arriving at around midday although doors didn't open until 1.30pm.

“It was great fun. Jacqueline was really nice and took her time speaking to the children and signing books.

“She also spoke about her love of animals and her pet cats.

“We had a fair number of adults there as well as children and it was very busy.”

Among those queuing to get in was Pam Williams, 36, and her daughter Chiara, 10, from Hove.

Mrs Williams said: “Chiara and her friend are really excited about this.
“We got the tickets in January and it seemed to take ages for today to come.

Chiara said: “I really love her books. I think my favourite is probably Hetty Feather. I'm looking forward to speaking to her and getting my book signed.”

The writer's latest book is a collection of animal stories called Paws and Whiskers, and proceeds from it will be going to Battersea Dogs Home.

Fans were still queuing to meet the author three hours after the event began.

Ms Ward said she was delighted with the day's success and the bookshop was hoping to hold similar events featuring other popular writers in the future.
