Guinea pigs tied in sack and dumped under tree

The Argus: The guinea pigs - two male and three pregnant females The guinea pigs - two male and three pregnant females

Guinea pigs were left abandoned in a bag under a tree.

Angry animal lovers labelled the perpetrators “scum” on the internet after the five guinea pigs – including three which were pregnant – were left in Climping Road, Ifield, Crawley.

They were discovered by a dog- walker who rescued them and called Bobtails Rescue Centre in Epsom, Surrey.

Bobtails took the guinea pigs in and the animals appear to be none the worse for their ordeal.

A spokeswoman from Bobtails said the incident had not been reported to the police because they did not have any leads.

She added: “We received a call from a man who had been taking his dog for its morning walk, when it darted off and found a woven nylon sack tied up under a tree.

“Luckily the gentleman was able to reach the sack and was shocked to find it contained five guinea pigs.

“He contacted us to see if we could take them in.

“Happily they are all healthy, we have two males and three females whom we believe to all be pregnant.

“Dumping animals is cruel, irresponsible and also illegal. They would not have survived long. It would only have been a matter of time before they were found and killed by either a dog or fox.”

Hideous, how could anyone be so callous! I continually struggle to understand this cruel mentality. Is it so difficult to take them to a rescue centre. It sends shivers down my spine to think of the suffering they would have endured, slowly starving and dehydrating to death. Thank heavens a sharp eyed dog walker found them and well done to the dog that sniffed them out! Blame also extends to breeders and some pet stores selling these living animals to irresponsible idiots with flimsy or no checks at all!

I think this is disgusting and just hope whoever left them there has no other animals because no doubt the same thing would happen once they'd got fed up with them !! Thank goodness the dog found them and it's owner took the trouble to find out what was in the bag and get them to safety.

Scum seems an apt descriptive in this case , but well done dog-walker, you have slightly restored my faith in humanity, un-like those who so cruelly abandoned them to die.

I totally agree, I would never have dumped guinea pigs as they are actually edible (Peruvians eat 60 million a year) and a whole bagful would have fed a family.
