With reference to Alistair Dalby’s letter in The Argus of Tuesday, April 1, I agree 100% with his comments on transport connections in our area, both on road and rail.

This Government is always putting pressure on our area to build thousands of new homes in an already heavily populated region.

It has also agreed to a second runway at Gatwick Airport.

Concerning the road network, I have in the past complained about the A27 stretch from Shoreham to Arundel but to no avail.

Ideas that basically involve patching things up, tinkering and saving money have gone ahead with no improvement being made. A sheer waste of money.

As Alistair states, never mind HS2, what about our area?

Our MPs should be fighting for more streamlined transport connections both on our railways and on our roads.

Otherwise this whole area will come to a standstill – like the A27 as it goes through Worthing.

We need two things now: firstly, a new motorway through tunnels around Lancing and Worthing. Plans were drawn up in November 1992 but were cancelled. Secondly, more thought should be given to the double-decker trains which were built, designed and tested at the old Lancing Railway Works in the 1950s and 60s.

Both these projects put together would only be a fraction of the cost of the HS2.

When abroad in Europe, we often see brand new motorways and railway extensions paid for partly by us through the coffers of Brussels.
