Latest from Sussex Police:

Road closures around the Lewes Road gyratory system in Brighton are expected to ease as police secured a man after reports of a gun being seen in the area.

Armed police were called at 2.17pm. A suspect went into a nearby house and police sealed off the building, which resulted in a number of local roads being closed, causing traffic disruption in the area.

Detective Superintendent Steve Black said: "We are aware that this operation is causing significant disruption, but it is essential that the cordon and road closures are in place to ensure the safety of people living and working locally and everyone involved.

"I would like to thank everyone for their co-operation. We are bringing the incident to a safe conclusion, but it will be necessary to remain in the area for some time. However, we are now lifting some of the restrictions."

5:31pm

Ben James tells us the man has been led out of the Sainsbury's side of the block of flats.

The southbound Lewes Road is now reopened, but the northbound remains closed.

Ben added that the man in handcuffs appeared to be quite grumpy.

Chris Murdock, of Upper Lewes Road, said: “I saw the police arrive at about 3pm out of my back window which looks onto the Vogue Gyratory.

“I could see the whole building being closed down. It was very strange. I've never seen so many police around here - even when tat guy held himself up in Sainsbury's a few years ago.”

Staff at the Gladstone pub watched police unloading guns outside the pub.

One member of staff said: “I didn't see anything until the police turned up and started getting all their guns out.

“It seems to have scared some of our customers away as it has been quieter than usual.”

4:54pm

One resident of the block of flats said: “I just nipped out to Sainsbury's and I wasn't allowed back home. I've just been stood out here in the rain watching the armed police storm in.

“It's terrifying. The police won't tell me what's going on but there's a guy with a gun.”

A woman visiting a pregnant friend who lives in the block said: “I was just coming to see my friend and found the place taped off and police everywhere.

"I've tried to call her and she's not answering so I'm a bit worried.”

4:49pm

Sussex Police say the incident is still ongoing. Nobody is thought to be injured at this time.

4:46pm

Paramedics are still going in and out of the block of flats according to Argus photographer Terry Applin who is at the scene.

4:43pm

Emily Walker says that loads of people are milling at the scene having read about the incident online.

Even the persistent rain is not putting them off.

Emily Walker has now returned to our offices in Hollingbury. She says that roads around the scene are at near gridlock.

This isn't the first time police have been called to reports of a gun at the Vogue Gyratory.

In May 2012, a man locked himself in the toilets of Sainsbury's claiming to have a gun and a bomb.

That time, following a four-hour siege, police stormed the toilets and the man was arrested.

3:45pm

Emily Walker says: "Armed police are in the flats at the moment. There are as many police cars as I can ever remember seeing at a police scene before.

Sainsbury's has been shut, and all nearby shop staff and residents have been evacuated.

"There is no sign of the suspect as yet."

An eyewitness on the scene said: “About nine police cars and an ambulance are here, and somebody said armed police have gone in – but you know how these stories get passed on.”

“All the roads are closed off and the pavements too, the police have not told us anything yet.”

The Argus:

Ben James has spoken to Sussex Police. They say they were called to reports of a man with a gun on the street who has since gone inside a block of flats.

I know they are dammed if they do and dammed if they dont, but from what I am hearing it appears a little bit of an over reaction by the police for what I suspect will turn out to be a nutter without a gun.
