A woman was rescued from a river.

Members of the public called Sussex Police after spotting the woman go into the River Arun, near Surrey Street, Littlehampton, around 7.10pm on Friday.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “The 49-year-old local woman was recovered from the water by police and Littlehampton lifeboat and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital to be treated for the effects of water inhalation.

“She is in a stable condition and will remain in hospital while she recovers.”
