A man was attacked by a stranger with a knife after he complimented a woman's appearance.

The 36-year-old man from Hove was walking up Cannon Place in Brighton on Friday April 11 as another man and woman walked towards him at around 10.40pm.

He complimented the woman on her appearance and an argument ensued. The man with the woman pulled out a knife, slashed the victim across his cheek and then chased him to the top of Queensbury Mews.

The victim received hospital treatment for his injury and was then discharged.

The man with the knife is described as being of mixed race or arabic in appearance, between 20 to 40 years, of skinny build, with big bushy eyebrows and long black hair in a pony tail.

He was wearing blue jeans, black jumper, and white trainers. The woman he was with is described as white, in her twenties, about 5'10", with long black hair, and of slim build. She was wearing a short black skirt.

PC Neil Lambert said; "If you were in the area and saw anything of this incident we would like to hear from you. Please call us via 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 1623 of 11/4. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Putting aside the racist generalisation If they're that tight knit then they're not going to identify him are they.

Why did the man think it appropriate to give her a 'compliment'? Was it a compliment or really just a lewd compliment. Shame he got cut but you have to agree it was a very stupid thing to do.

I very much doubt he was just politely complimenting her appearance, maybe this will make a few men think twice about ‘complimenting’ random women in the street! If it was just another man shouting abuse at a women this wouldn’t even be newsworthy.

I think the point in this case is the man used a knife so needs to be arrested for the safety of us all. Also in my hometown in Cumbria when you walk past someone if its morning you say goodmorning etc but in brighton if you did that to a stranger they would think you were being funny. But whatever the reason was in this case the use of a knife is the issue that need sorting,i hope the woman realises the danger this man is.

Why? If you saw anything, you wouldn't need to ask the time.

You cannot assume domestic violence & "kicking him back to where he from" is a hateful comment.

And as for the "compliment", there are men out there who think "nice tits love" is a compliment & if someone said that to me, I'd take assertive action. I *do* take assertive action!

But knives? No, not acceptable under any circumstances. The sort of bloke who would casually slash someone's face is not the sort of person who should be allowed out without shackles.
