Superintendent Wilson may have missed my letters to The Argus prior to April, suggesting that Stuart Bower’s obsession with the common law breach of the peace would be ineffective in dealing with travellers.
I am pleased Mr Bower’s letter of April 25 takes the point – specific legislation to deal with traveller camps and their vehicles is the only solution.
As the law now stands, police in England can only take a piece-meal approach to the issue.
Defence lawyers will drive a coach and horses through the old common law.
We do need to lobby our MPs but, sadly, being left of centre and living in Portslade I’ll have to wait until 2015 to get an audience with one.
