People often ask me: what is interior styling? It’s a difficult question to answer outright as an interior stylist’s job can encompass so many different elements.

Mostly, it is to produce beautiful images through arranging products, furnishings and décor in a way that both inspires the viewer, represents current trends and often ‘sells’ a particular product or lifestyle.

Combined with the skills of a fantastic photographer, these elements are what make up most of the stunning home/product and lifestyle images you browse through online and in magazines and books.

My job combines interior styling with elements of interior design, and what is classed as event styling, and these are skills that can be learned. But a lot of it comes down to intuition, having a great eye for style and detail, spending a lot of time researching and being aware of current trends.

This is an image of an area I styled at A Most Curious Wedding Fair in London. Although it is an example of event styling, it can be adapted and used for inspiration in your own home or garden or for a party.

Here are a few pointers to get you started: Items look great en masse, grouped together for that ‘wow’ effect. I have done this here by grouping rosette wheels I made and again grouping a line of retro flasks as vases.

Don’t be afraid to mix up a few colours. You should see if something doesn’t work when you place them together, but if you’re unsure, stick within colours close to each other in the colour spectrum. Here, I used pink, red, orange, coral and peach.

If using bright colours or a mix of colours, then keep backgrounds simple. If you have red walls, then adding collections of blue and green vases in front would be too much for the eye. In the image shown, using so many colours worked well as I had a completely wooden backdrop and accessories.

Lastly, and this is rather an obvious one, no space is complete without fresh flowers and plants. Mix up the heights if using a collection of vases together. And if all else fails, than call in the experts.
