We are coming up to the anniversary of D-Day and the start of the First World War – a time when relations, friends and comrades will wish to go and pay their respects to those who gave their lives in both conflicts in order that we can live our lives as they are today.

Are we going to have to do this in front of a Brighton memorial dedicated to them in such a disgusting state? I believe that in The Argus last year (October 25, 2013) a council spokesperson said this would be cleaned at least twice a year. Council leader Jason Kitcat said, “We take great care of our memorials and have a regime of cleaning and maintenance in place.”

Does he have to wait to be reminded every time? Our fallen didn’t need reminding to do their duty. They carried out their duty with pride and respect.

He should take note of the sign on the fence of this memorial stating that it commemorates those who died serving their country, and show some respect by getting it cleaned.
