While Adam Trimingham (The Argus, May 21) may be correct in stating that Gatwick is easy to reach on the motorway network and has a fast, frequent train link to London, he, like the Gatwick Airport bid team and West Sussex County Council in supporting that bid, fails to explain how the roads and especially the trains will cope with the huge increase in passengers that a second runway will bring.

Network Rail already tells us that the Brighton main line is full to capacity at peak times and that increasing the number of dedicated Gatwick Express trains can only be achieved at the expense of other trains from the Sussex coast.

Indeed, regular travellers from Sussex to London will know that at all times of the day, large numbers of air passengers – with luggage – already use these cheaper (mostly already full) trains, which have minimal provision for such footfall.
