I write in respect of the proposition of a 20mph zone being introduced to Worthing.

I previously lived in Brighton for about four years, where I fully understand and appreciate the importance of 20mph zones.

Brighton and Hove is, after all, a city with a lot of congestion and pedestrians crossing the roads without looking for where traffic is coming from.

In a big city, 20mph zones are there for a good reason.

However, the thought of a 20mph zone being introduced in Worthing seems rather pointless.

Worthing is a town, not a city, with a lower number of residents.

Taxis are already expensive but I imagine their business would really go down when drivers have to charge more for taking customers to shops due to the 20mph zone.

I certainly won’t be able to afford a taxi, even in the case of an emergency – not to mention the increase of car emissions in our already-polluted environment.

Do we really feel a 20mph zone is required?

Also, as a driver myself, I am careful with my speed but this 20mph zone is an insinuation that all drivers cannot be trusted.

I agree that there are too many drivers on the road – many households have multiple cars.

The idea of a 20mph zone is supposed to ease congestion but I do not see this as the case.

If this goes ahead, traffic would build up and of course there will always be the odd driver who doesn’t adhere to the local speed limit.

Worthing is a local town, not a city, and this zone would change this town one way or another.
