A 24-year-old was jumped by three men who hit him in the face, back and ribs.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault which took place in Warrior Square, St Leonards, close to midnight on May 21.
The male victim was near to the junction with Warrior Gardens when the trio approached.
They hit him in the face, back and ribs and he was taken to hospital for treatment.
PC Tessa Warren said: "All three suspects were described as between 19 and 21. One of the suspects has distinctive blackened front teeth and is described as being white with a grey tracksuit with yellow writing down the legs.
“All three are described as having their hoods up.”
